Chapter 7 - Don
The doorbell rang while Don was rocking Alex to sleep. His son had been difficult all day, rotating between bouts of refusing to sleep and eat or just endlessly crying. Michael was in a similar attitude, but at least he was better than yesterday. Since Dr. Cook was adamant that this was just normal newborn behavior made worse by the unusual circumstances of Michael and Alexâs births, Don trucked ahead with very little sleep and very little of his sanity intact.
A full-time single parent to shifter children was not a job he would choose under different circumstances. With an exhausted sigh, Don placed Alex back into his crib and tucked him beneath his favorite fuzzy blanket, and then went to the front door.
Will was standing out on the front porch, bundled up in his winter gear. Curls of dark hair poked out from beneath a blue striped tuque and sleek black jacket. Don waved him in. âThanks for coming over.â
âYou made it sound like it was important I came over as soon as possible, so here I am,â Will said as he came inside, knocking the snow off his boots on the threshold first. âWhatâs going on?â
âErm ⦠well thatâs a long story.â Don pressed his hands together and decided to just rip off the band-aid: âTwo things: one, some of my memories are coming back. Second, I have a date in about an hour that I need your help preparing for.â
âMemories? What memories? And what, you have a date? Damn you move fast.â
âLook, it happened completely by accident. I didnât even mean to sleep with her, let alone ask her out, and sheâs just so good with Alex and Michael that Iââ
Will held out his hands in a âslow downâ motion. âHold on, hold on,â he said with a laugh. âYou mean to say youâve already slept with this mysterious chick youâre going on a date with tonight, and Iâm only just hearing about this now? I thought we were better friends than that.â
âLike I said, none of this was supposed to happen. We just met, and then she was able to help me with Michael and Alex, and things went out of control from there.â
âYouâre going to have to start from the beginning. Let me get my boots off before you get too carried away.â Will started on his laces, quickly kicking them off onto the black winter mat. âWho is she? Thatâs always a good place to start.â
Don let out an exasperated sigh. He didnât want to spill the beans on his and Brookâs secret, but he trusted Will. Of all the wolves Don had met so far in Kaldron, he could be absolutely certain that Will wasnât a gossip. If he promised not to breathe a word, then he wouldnât, and the secret would just stay between the two of them.
Talking was always a risk, but in this case, Don needed someone to talk to and make sure he wasnât crazy for thinking everything he was thinking about Brook.
